In a podcast I listened to awhile ago (I’ll add the link shortly), a noted psychologist examined the forces with humanity that makes us do bad things, that makes us use and abuse each other to accomplish our own (usually short-term) needs.
The ways we can be less than nice are many. What is interesting is that the solution is simple – be a hero.
Being heroic counters all the evils we may do. Heroes help. Heroes do not seek riches and adulation (though they may attract these as a by-product, which they accept with humility). Heroes act, especially when doing so is hard.
Seek to do the right thing, not necessarily the most profitable. Stand up to them when fear takes hold, and keep them from doing the wrong thing. Show grace, kindness, compassion and strength. Don’t be their financial advisor, or their investment broker, or their insurance salesperson. Be their hero.
